Being a small and close knit department we pay special attention to building community spirit and creating intimate and friendly atmosphere among students and staff.
"The Russian department is my favourite because it's like a small community and it's made so interesting. The teachers are so nice and willing to help. They make the effort to build a relationship with you so you want to come back to the lessons". (Jack Wood French and Russian BA)
Students of the Russian Department have a long-running practice of staging and performing annual spring-time plays in Russian. This beautiful tradition gives our students extra opportunity to practice in spoken Russian and enables them to get to know one another across the year groups creating a sense of community.
Throughout the year we organise Russian parties, musical performances, film screenings, and talks by invited speakers. We also organise trips to take advantage of the London’s rich range of Russian-related cultural activities.
"I loved taking part in the Russian Play. I also enjoy classes with guest lecturers from Russia, especially those who have made films as I enjoy gathering as a department to watch these and then speak to the lecturer about them". (Imogen Cable, Russian BA)
Every year we invite prominent academic visitors from Russia (such as filmmakers and scholars), who offer 'cultural enrichment' classes and additional opportunities for oral conversation.
Our Departmental Facebook Group (QMUL Russian Department) is regularly updated with recent interesting Russian-language and culture related news and events.
